Roman wall stretching across a field near Avenches

Roman Wall, Avenches, Vaud

The Roman city of Aventicum, close to modern Avenches, lay on the main route between Lake Geneva and the Rhine, and was the capital of Roman Helvetia, and had a populaton of about 20,000. (Modern Avenches has 2,500 inhabitants.) Part of the 8 meter high surrounding wall and the eastern gate are well preserved (with a little help), although the wall stretches across a field several hundred meters from the modern town.
