The building has the Minergie label, which indicates low energy consumption. Since Minergie is a registered trade name, only buildings meeting the energy standard without loss of comfort are allowed to use the label. Minergie buildings can be built of any material and to any design. By mid-2004, some 2,500 buildings conformed to the label. Many were detached houses, but they included other kinds of homes, schools and offices.
