The bank of the Rhine, left in its natural condition

Natural River Bank, Rhine, Aargau

Since 1850 the floodplains of Swiss rivers have been drastically reduced as embankments have been built to channel their flow. This has led to a loss of biodiversity. However, the trend is now being reversed in some places, with some riverbanks being left wild to develop naturally.
