Mont Soleil Solar Power Site, Canton Bern (3)
Rear view of one of the 110 panels at the Mont Soleil solar power plant. The silicon panels, standing in a field on a hilltop, have a total area of about 4,500 square meters (nearly 50,000 square feet). They are tilted at the best angle to catch the winter sun. The plant, which produces nearly 600,000 KWh annually (enough for nearly 200 households), is one of the biggest in Europe. However, its main purpose is research, rather than production. Techniques and materials developed all over the world are tested at the centre. At present production costs are quite uneconomic.
