Two buildings of the former commandry, Tobel-Tägerschen

Commandry, Tobel-Tägerschen, Thurgau

A commandry, or Komturei, is the name given to the administrative unit of an order of knights, in this case the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. The order was given land all over Europe: the income was intended to support their activities in the Holy Land, and later in Rhodes when they were driven out of Jerusalem. The commandry in Tobel-Tägerschen was founded in 1228. Three wings were built in 1744. It was used as a cantonal prison from 1809 to 1972. The west wing was demolished in 1973.
