Bastion, Bellinzona, Ticino
Bellinzona, the capital of Canton Ticino, occupies a strategic position at the end of the Levantina valley, guarding the southern access to the Gotthard pass. This was an important route linking Italy with northern Europe. The city's defenses consist of three castles connected by a fortified wall. They were built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Bellinzona has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
