Roofs and a tower at the monastery in Einsiedeln

Courtyard, Einsiedeln Monastery, Canton Schwyz

The Benedictine monastery in Einsiedeln was founded in 934 on the spot where St Meinrad was murdered in 861. It is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Switzerland, thanks to its shrine of the Virgin Mary with its statue of the Black Madonna. The main buildings date to the 18th century and are an outstanding example of baroque architecture.
