The portal where the Jungfrau train enters the mountain

Jungfrau Tunnel Entrance, Bernese Oberland, Canton Bern

The Jungfrau railway enters the mountain at the Eigergletscher station. Construction of the line began in 1896, and the first stretch, running outside the mountain between the Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher opened in 1898. The line was completed in 1912, with the opening of the station at the Jungfraujoch, 3454 meters (11,330 feet) above sea level. For seven kilometers (4.3 miles) the track runs inside the Eiger and Mönch mountains.
