A route through the mountain – the longest ever made. The first tunnel under the Gotthard was finished in 1882, linking Germany, Switzerland and Italy and was a record 15 kilometres long. Just over a century later, history has repeated itself. On October 15, 2010, the last breakthrough will be made in the new rail tunnel and the Gotthard will once again be the scene of a record.
