Switzerland: it all adds up!

Glass

The many uses
of glass

The Swiss are veritable champions of recycling: in 2003, they recycled 70 per cent of all paper, 95 per cent of all glass, 71 per cent of all plastic bottles, 85-90 per cent of aluminium, and 75 percent of all tin cans. Appropriately perhaps, the Secretariat of the International Conference on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal  is based in Basel. Not surprisingly, this high level of recycling activity inspires the Swiss and their love of things fiddly, intricate and complicated. One example: the firm Misapor reprocesses about 25,000 tonnes of used glass every year into foam glass sheets, a product used for insulating buildings against heat and cold, for stabilising roads, or for reinforcing slopes or building embankments.
