Research in Switzerland
National Centre for Competence in Research
The Swiss National Science Foundation funds a long term climate project under the National Centre for Competence in Research (NCCR) scheme.
This particular project, whose interest extends far beyond Switzerland, is a network grouping the universities of Bern, Fribourg and Geneva, the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology, a number of Federal agencies, and the Swiss Re reinsuring company.
It includes such topics as historical climate change, the development of computer models to diagnose and forecast climate events, and the impact of climate change on ecosystems.
Jungfraujoch Research Station
Climate research is not confined to examining ice records. Scientists at the weather research station on the Jungfraujoch in the Bernese Oberland are involved in a global programme of the World Meteorological Organisation investigating how fine particles in the air take up water vapour.
These particles influence the formation of clouds and also scatter sunlight back into space, which in turn influences the climate.
