Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908 - 1942) was a writer, photographer and traveller. She belonged to a family of rich Zurich industrialists, and was the grand-daughter of General Ulrich Wille, the commander of the Swiss army in World War I.

Schwarzenbach started writing both journalistic and literary works while still a student. She visited the US in 1936, touring the country and documenting in her photo reports the mass unemployment and widespread misery in the aftermath of the Great Depression.

Her life was blighted by morphium addiction and depression, for which she underwent repeated psychiatric treatment.

In 1939 she travelled to Afghanistan with Ella Maillart, in an attempt to conquer her drug addiction. Both of them published books about the journey.

Schwarzenbach died in Switzerland at the age of 35 following a bicycling accident.
