People in Switzerland are looking forward to celebrating Christmas at this time of year. Although the winter is dark and cold, for many Swiss people it is their favourite season. This newsletter will give you some idea why, so read on.
We wish all our readers a Happy New Year, and hope you will continue to enjoy swissworld.org in 2008 as well!

The link competition ended on November 30th. We'd like to thank all those who took part in this competition and helped spread swissworld.org, the Gateway to Switzerland, world-wide. The aim was to link swissworld.org to as many relevant websites as possible. This was done more than 10'000 times, primarily thanks to our Asian users.
The winners will be contacted by Presence Switzerland in the coming days and the winners’ names will be published on the swissworld.org website by the end of December 2007.

What would Switzerland be without its mountains? For a reminder of everything that the mountains stand for, have a look at The Summit, one of the sections of Story Switzerland.
The mountains are just one of the subjects featured in this section, which relates concisely and wittily with examples from many walks of life just how it all adds up in Switzerland.
There's plenty more detailed information about the mountains elsewhere in swissworld.org. Have you looked at our mountain special? You'll probably be surprised at some of the things you can read there.
Did you know Switzerland has not only the highest railway station in Europe, but also the highest vineyard and the highest brewery? Or that Pontius Pilate is said to be buried on a mountain near Lucerne? Do you know how plants cope with rolling stones? Or which mountain animal has horns up to a meter long?
You can find out about all of these, and much more besides in the mountain special. And have a look at the other specials too, all of them providing an in-depth view of different typically Swiss subjects.

For many people, winter in Switzerland means skiing and snowboarding in the mountains. But those are by no means the only attractions on offer in winter.
A look at our sporting activities section will give you plenty of other ideas, from the intensely gruelling Patrouille des Glaciers to the lighthearted snow bicycle.
We invite you to take a different look at the mountains in our Mountains and Rivers resource, and to consider why they have always been so important to the Swiss.
But it's not all deadly serious: you can also read about Barry the heroic St Bernard, the world's oldest Alpine guide and discover how James Bond blew the top off a Swiss mountain.

A winter newsletter wouldn't be complete without a mention of the customs that are celebrated in Switzerland in winter. Our Customs and Traditions DVD is full of information about some of the strange things that go on at this time of year.
Driving out demons with smoke, beating in the New Year with flails, burning a giant pole covered in straw, a green man, a lion and a griffin - all of these are things you can see somewhere in Switzerland in the winter.
