Stéphane Lambiel
Stéphane Lambiel (born 2 April 1985) is Switzerland's most successful professional figure skater. He has won popularity not only for his skill but also for his charisma. He is world famous for his spins, which are some of the fastest and most original in the sport today.
From an early age he had been seen as a rising star, with good placings in Swiss and international competitions, but hit the headlines in 2005 when he became world champion in Moscow. He retained his title in 2006. He was the first Swiss world champion in the discipline since Denise Biellmann in 1981.
In the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Lambiel took silver in the men's free skate. Things seemed to take a turn for the worse the following year when the 20-year-old announced his withdrawal from the 2007 European Championships, citing a lack of motivation and focus. However, he also made it clear that he would compete in the World Championships in Tokyo later that year. True to his word, he came back and dazzled both the public and the judges with his Flamenco-inspired freestyle programme, finally taking home the bronze.
During the 2007-2008 figure skating season, Lambiel was the surprise winner of the Grand Prix Final in Turin. He followed up this victory with a silver medal at the European Championships. His winning streak came to an end at the World Championships in Göteborg. In the short programme he touched down on two jumps, losing him valuable points. Regrettably, he was unable to recover his composure by the time the freestyle programme came around and finished a disappointing fifth.
On 16 October 2008 Stéphane Lambiel announced his retirement, citing a lingering hip injury. Less than 12 months later, he returned to competitive figure skating. Lambiel competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he finished fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal place.
