Simone Niggli-Luder
Simone Niggli-Luder (born 9 January 1978) is one of the world's leading female orienteers. She came to public attention in 2003 when she won gold in four disciplines during the World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland.
She won a further four golds in the 2005 World Championships, and two apiece in the 2006 and 2007 championships.
On 9 June 2002 she was ranked number one in the world. However, in August 2008, her unbroken reign at the top would come to an end when she withdrew from the World Championships in the Czech Republic owing to her pregnancy.
In 2009, Simone returned to competition in style. Not only did she recapture her world number one ranking, she also won the long-distance event at the World Orienteering Championship in Hungary. At the 2010 WOC, she mastered the Norwegian countryside and forests like no-one else, and her outstanding sporting performance was rewarded with two golds and one silver.
Her medal haul since 2001 is impressive: a total of 19 gold medals at the world championships, and four in the last two European championships (2004 and 2006). She is also a multiple winner of the Swiss orienteering championships.
