Roger Federer (born 8th August 1981) is the best known and most successful Swiss sportsman at the present time. He has headed the world rankings in tennis since January 30th 2004.

At the end of February 2007 he took a new record, having stayed world number one for the longest ever unbroken stint. The previous record of 160 weeks was set by Jimmy Connors in 1977.

He has won all the grand slam tournaments except for the French Open at least once.

In 2007 he won the men's single title at Wimbledon for the fifth successive year, only the second man to achieve this feat since 1906. (The other was Bjorn Borg in 1980.) In 2007 Federer became the first man since 1925 to win the US Open four times in succession.

In 2005 Federer was the first Swiss to win the prestigious Laureus World Sports Award, naming him the World Sportsman of the Year. He won it again in the following two years, the first person ever to achieve this hat trick.

The Swiss post office issued a stamp in his honour in 2007, the first time a living person had been commemorated in this way.

In December 2003 he established the Roger Federer Foundation to support disadvantaged children and young people in South Africa, his mother's home country. The foundation works in partnership with the South African/Swiss aid agency IMBEWU.

In April 2006 he was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the global children's charity, Unicef.
