Pirmin Zurbriggen

Pirmin Zurbriggen (born 4th February 1963) was one of the world's leading downhill skiers in the 1980s.

Overall in his career he won a total of 40 World Cup victories; between 1984 and 1990 he was four times world champion, and three times runner-up.

He was most unusual among skiers in that he was a true all-rounder, the first person to win all five specialities of modern alpine ski racing.

Although he narrowly missed a medal at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, he won gold and bronze in Calgary four years later in downhill and giant slalom respectively.

Zurbriggen was popular not only for his sporting achievements, but also because in his private life he was seen as a reflective and deeply religious person, far removed from the cliché of the aggressive athlete.

He retired from competition in 1990 to devote himself to another typical Swiss occupation: hotel keeping. He still runs a two hotels in Canton Valais, one in Zermatt and one in his native village of Saas Almagell.
