The Swiss economy suffered two downturns in the 1920s and 30s which left large numbers of people unemployed, and which struck the important textile industry a blow from which it never properly recovered.

The overall economic trend, as agricultural employment fell and industry stagnated, was a shift away from the productive sectors into services.
