The Treaty of Westphalia and Swiss independence

Although the Swiss cantons had taken no part in the 30 Years War, they ended up one of the main beneficiaries. Under the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, skilfully negotiated for the Confederation by the Burgermeister of Basel, Johann Rudolf Wettstein (1594-1666), all the European powers formally recognised Swiss independence.
