In May 2006 Swiss voters approved overwhelmingly a proposal to improve coordination between the cantons, and to enable the federal authorities to impose decisions from above should the cantons be unable to agree among themselves on matters of educational policy.

Projects are underway to harmonise teaching in such areas as foreign languages, mathematics and science. Nationwide targets are to be set in certain subjects, which all students are to achieve by a specific age.
