A relatively small proportion of Switzerland's power is generated from fossil fuels - in stark contrast to some of its neighbours. In a conventional thermal power station, the fuel is used to heat water, which gives off steam at high pressure. This in turn drives turbines to create electricity. Some small thermal power stations in Switzerland use rubbish instead of fossil fuels.
